The San Antonio Riverwalk is the lifeblood of downtown San Antonio. We say it all the time, but SA is the biggest small town in the world.

I mean, this city has over 1.3 million people, yet when you go downtown you’re not confronted by what feels like millions of blocks of concrete jungle. The San Antonio River walk is part of the reason it feels cozy downtown.

You can find all sorts of bars, restaurants, and fun things to do. Back in my “band days” we gigged at just about every bar there is downtown, so I can honestly say I’ve got a “soft spot” in my heart for the Riverwalk ;-)

The Riverwalk is always free, and if you’re so inclined you can even jump on a boat on get a nice little tour.

The MAIN REASON I love the Riverwalk is because I proposed to my wife on Marriage Island.

Funny story: We had dinner at a favorite Italian Restaurant, La Focaccia, and then went down to the River. It was December, so it was pretty freakin’ cold, and that ring box was akwardly jammed in my jacket. I had no idea how or where I was going to pop the question, but it was a “new tradition” for us to go see the Christmas lights on the River in December.

So, we’re walking along, and it’s kind of crowded. My heart sank a little, and I thought “where the heck am I going to do this?” Lo & behold, a few short minutes later the crowds thin out and I spot this little Island going out into the River. “Perfect!” I thought, and took her over there. I got down on my knee, more nervous than I’d ever been in my life, and asked, “Amber, will you be my wife?” God I was nervous!

But, she said yes! It was the happiest moment of my life, and only later did I find out the thing was called Marriage Island! Ha, what a lucky guy :-)
